School Safety Begins In the Community
(Article submitted by Mr. Robert Kipper, National School Safety Specialist from Newport News, Virginia)

Certainly the events of recent months have turned our thoughts to personal and community safety. During this time of safety awareness our schools must take a check on safety preparedness. Safety in school should not be viewed as a burden of the school but a responsibility for all citizens.

School safety begins in the community before students leave their homes each day to enter the campus area. The safety and welfare of students in the overall community leads to a successful school climate. School safety does not occur by accident. It happens when schools work together with the community to insure that students are practicing good citizenship skills based on respect and tolerance.

Teachers should not tackle the issue of campus safety alone. Their role should be one of supporting a safer school, which leads to a safer community. After all, the school is the community and the community is the school.

$10.55 to $11.39 SS(EC 10 Step 5 SS)

Peace Corps News

Peace Corps Elementary School is off and running this year on our new and beautifully landscaped campus. The "crown jewel"of our new facility is our library, a labor of love for our librarian Mrs. Garee and her assistant Mrs. Dorsett. The library receives much praise from all who enters. Exquisitely decorated, the library entices us to explore the world of books and videos housed within.

Staff, students and parents have been busy with a host of events since school began. The PTA under the leadership of President, Elva Richards-Huggins, has an exciting calendar planned for this school year. The September and October meetings as well as the November social and raffle were well attended. Parents, Guardians and school personnel turned out in great numbers. Activities to look forward to include: Love yourself Read-A-ton-February ‘02, Recognition Luncheon-May ‘02.

Participation in the 2002 Children’s Parade - April ‘02. In October for American Education Week P.C.S. held a contest.

"What I like best about my School...."

Primary students submitted an illustration. Intermediate Students submitted an essay. Prizes were sponsored by Senate President Almando Liburd, L. Henley and P.L.E.S. PTA. In November the School had a wonderful Veteran’s Day. It was very patriotic with most classes participating. Also, in November the school hosted a meeting for ten STT/STJ elementary schools who participated in the RIF-Reading is Fundamental National Program Specialist Carisa Coburn and Senior Program Specialist Aaron Yeatts from R.I.F. in Washington, D.C. conducted the meeting in our fabulous library.

In December the program centered around a play "Scenes of Christmas." Individual students from all classes performed, recited or sang their parts. In addition to the play, the Hearing Impaired and MIS Intermediate classes presented a skit and song about unlikely heroes of Christmas past (Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer) and Christmas present (military, police, fire persons, etc.) The group also sang and signed God Bless America.  The P.C.S. Choir was busy during the month of December. They performed at the Reichold Center for a taping by WTJX, which was aired during the Christmas holidays along with the Governor’s Christmas Message. The choir’s tape was aired on "AFT Speaks."

At Peace Corps Elementary

The St. Thomas East End Lions Club sponsored a Christmas Party for all students and presented goodies.
